When I was a kid, my family went to Miami in the winter of 1976.  We drove a station wagon for 2 days...from West Virginia to Florida...4 kids squealing and bawling the whole way.  When we got there, the water was warm, but the air was really cold.  My Dad wore his winter coat and collected shells w/ us kids.  We kept wet to keep warm.  We filled bags and then went to the pool.  At one point I was the only person in the pool (very skinny little white kid) and the coolest thing was happening... a band was there to entertain and they kept playing song after song including "Play that funky music" which was a little weird because I was their only audience...floating there at the edge of the pool.

Today my brother and I were wandering thru a ton of junk in my Dad's garage and I found 4 whale's eye shells and a few others...down deep under years of stuff and I'm sure that's where they came from.  We never, ever went to a beach w/ any shells after that.

They're in a tank of shellies now, where they belong.

I was never sure that the shells were there naturally or not.  I've heard some hotels would truck in sand and also shells from time to time after storms, etc.

I've occasionally found other shells at other beaches on the east coast, but usually they were broken or holey.

The abundance of perfect shells we found on that one Miami trip was amazing!
