HOB, sponge, or canister filter?

First question is which filter do you think is better a HOB, Canister, or Sponge..... or is their a combination of two that you prefer?
Second, I recently purchased a 30 breeder, 40 long, and 33 long from craig's list for 145.00. All came with sponge filters, and lights. I currently have HOB filters on my 2 (15's), 1(10), and 1(20 long) gallon tanks. The filters are rated for at least double the gallon amount. My question is would the filtration on the new tanks be o.k. if I had one sponge and one HOB filter?
