if the black substrate is in fact something like recycled glass....DON'T USE IT...i've had bad results...deaths...use fine sand or really small gravel.

It's something i've found out the hard way.  Sad

I think it might be actually... here is a shot of it, you can see a peice in the middle that is quite a strange shape.  Might change it out for plain old white sand.

Ya, I definately would not use that as shellie tank substrate...white caribbean sand is awesome...though it is expensive...or something similar.

Question up Front: Would my breeding colony of multies be better of in a 10g solo or in a 100g Tang community?

The details: I have a 100g (5 foot) tang community tank with the multies, Calvus (7), Malongenys (Cool, Cyp blue flash (Cool, and one lone J transcriptus.  The multies are the only breeding right now but the Cyps have been holding and the sand sifters have been digging and displaying. One of the sandsifters is starting to dig a pit in the middle of the multi colony.

I have a 10g that is empty and can set up. I know multies can go in a 10g but would they be better in the larger tank or it?

TIA,
Tony

BTW, asked this in a similar form in setup area but haven't gotten a response.  Decided to ask again in a slightly different way since wife said no more tanks =(  (Can't blame her, don't have too much room as it is)

I have a bunch of multies in a 10 gallon w/ shells surrounding some large lava rocks w/ tiny holes throughout.... they breed like rabbits in there

also have some in my 120 tang tank......they don't breed as often there, but I enjoy watching the males squabble and all the sand moving...more space to play......(no sandsifters here)

why not set up the 10 and move a few over and let them fill the tank in a few weeks, rather than try to stuff a colony that's been used to more space into the 10 and risk having some fish jump or get nipped.......that's what I'd do

fish head, sounds kind of what I was planning. Take the adults and move them to the 10g and leave the other in the 100g until I can get them to other loving fishkeeps. Does this sound like a good plan?

gonna try to catch them outta there but last time i just tore everything up  to no avail

Well they say "if your not learning your dead" so i guess i can attest to my aliveness on this day.

this morning i was up before the sun (dont ask why please) and i found that all the male multies were totally inside shells hiding to sleep?

as Mr. Head says still lots to learn from these fish and amen for something to remind me that life moves on
