Hi im 16 and have kept/bred most mbuna and wanted to try somthing else, i havnt had experience with shellies before so what better place to join. im in the middle of getting a tank not sure which size to go for?. my parents run a Aquatic shop but i want to teach myself all about fish instead of just asking them. Ive had alot of experience with cichlids from all over the world and had good results from most. Im not sure what else to put lol my ideal setup would be 20g-40g i dont like the look of standerd 55g lol
i want to have half the tank rock work and the other deep shell bed with a sand plain between them to try to discourage them crossing over to annoy eact other. the stock list would be 6x N.Brevis/N.Multi and 6x J.Transcriptus and let a pair form and remove the other? how does that sound? thats all i got lol

Nice another 16 year old in the forum  Smiley That makes you and me  Grin

If only my parents ran an aquatic shop.. Ohh the possibilities...

If you can get the space, try for a 75G. Considering your parents probably keep fish as well, you should have plenty of space.
with that 75, you can put in a wider variety of tangs.

I prefer Multies but its really up to the individual who keeps the fish. Brevis are less active IME.

You could probably ask your parents to bring in the shellies  Smiley
If you do have that option, try breeding a more uncommon type of shellie so you can sell em at the store. Speciosus are nice and feisty  Grin

thnx alot for your post, i just want to get my toes wet before jumping in with the more uncommon species lol. it comes in handy having the chance to order in fish most shops would not stock lol. the only problem is that my brother has a 150g frontosa tank and my parents dont really want another large tank in the house lol

A long tank (40 or 20) would be a great first shellie tank!!  In a 20 you might end up having to fish out the offspring sooner, but either one would be nice for the fish you're considering.

Many years ago, I almost became the owner of an aquatic shop, but things didn't work out.  My kids have since said working for dad in that way would not have been their desire.

Your parents are blessed that you share an interest in their career choice!

Please post pics on your progress, if you can.  Welcome to shelldwellers!

Ha! my parents would be more like
Ill give you anything if you take these fish tanks out of here!
They hate every animal except our dog lol.

Then again.. I do have the xbox 360 and my fish tanks and recently a Bearded Dragon so.. Cant complain here  Grin

How about like 2 20L and you keep 2 species of shellies.

I still opt for the 75. Tell em your gonna get good grades if you get a new fish tank(not very likely) I remember I actually did horrid last year because I got so much stuff. I got rid of alot of fish because of my crap marks. I think I've kept almost all the shellies besides the lepidiolamprologines and the Telmatochromis sps. Just got my Dhonti's so we'll see  Grin

Between the Brevis or multies though
+1 for the multies.

im leaning more towards the brevis because there shyer behaviour so hopefully fingers crossed it would work. having a few shells one side and a sand plain between the rock work would mean i could fit a pair of julidochromis transcriptus in with the neolamprologus brevis?
