Just an update on my L. callipterus.  When I bought them they were about 1.5" back at then end of November and now there's a dominant male.  He's about 3" and counting.  There's another probable male in that isn't too far behind him in size.  I don't have any shells in the tank because I currently have them housed with some hypancistrus plecos.  I don't want to see my plecos get locked up in the shells.  I am hoping to move them soon to their own tank.  Most of the other callipterus are 2".  Do they breed at that size?  Just curious.

Downsizing, What is that?  Oh, just another way of saying I'm going to get rid of a species or two to make room for more species.

Update.   The dominant male L. callipterus has chosen territory on one side of the tank.  He fights off and scares off any other fish that tries to enter his "space".  Hopefully he'll start attracting females to his territory and there will be breeding!

Multies,

No pictures Sad  Sadly his little show was short lived.  I believe the tank is too crowded.  I'm thinking there are 8 males and 4 females based on size and body.  I'm going to have to make room for the extra males, the similis, calliurus and synodontis petricola in another tank and leave the big male and the 4 assumed females by themselves or set up my 30 breeder (This is an excellent idea!!!).  Perhaps than, I'll see some action.

Update:  The dominant male moved a lot of escargot shells to one side of the tank (tank is divided in two by lace rock).  I haven't seen him move the shells but the shells were originally placed equally throughout the tank, not they're scattered in two areas.  I can post pictures tomorrow.  It looks like 8 males and 4 females.  Two dominant males, both about 4.5" and the other males are somewhere inbetween.  The females are ~2".

LOL!  I did that this morning minus the camping out part although I did see him try to move a much bigger shell with a brevis in it.  Here are some pictures of them and I over estimated the sizes of the dominant males.  They're approaching 4" not 4.5"  Sad

subominant males about 3"

As soon as I move the other fish out (the similis, calliurus, and the extra callipterus males) I'm sure they'll be more successful at spawning.

Alleycat:  I might not have the similis for long.  I need to thin out some of these fish to make room for the extras in that tank.

great pics!  thanks for posting!

they look like very cool fish

I know I don't have room for those big boys!  and that kind of sets me free to just enjoy your pics, w/out getting that "I gotta find some of those" surge.

Like I said before, if they breed, the fry are FREE!  Well, you'd pay for shipping but other than that I want to spread the wealth!

I hear ya ... I'm up to my eyeballs in Boulengeri, Hecqui, and Ornatipinnis.
I heard Jeff ( aquaclarity ) is having an open house in a couple of weeks. I'd like to drive up there and see all that he has, and pick up some of his Dewindti if he still has them. Are you going to see him?

Yeah, I think I'll be going, too.  I don't know if it'll be Saturday or Sunday.  The local fish club meeing is on May 12th and we're bringing it up there to see if we can make it an official club trip. That way gas and one meal will be paid for (if a minimum of 4 members go).  I'd like to pick up some more pleco caves...I'm crawling with bristlenose fry at the moment.
