Downsizing, What is that? Oh, just another way of saying I'm going to get rid of a species or two to make room for more species.

Canon PowerShot A520. All 4 megapixels of it. Got it for free though so can't complain. Back to the fish. The parents haven't eaten any young that I've seen and I'm pretty sure theres two generations of fry in there now.

I think the female you gave me already bred with my male. I'll have to wait and see if there's any fry in the next week or so.

Hi there, I read all post in this discussion but I didn't found what I was looking for for. I have my signatus for several months now, I had to give them their own space, their own tank and after one month of living together finally I/they have fry!!! As I know in my country no one had any luck with this species, concerning spawning, and I am the only one that have them so I have no one to ask for advice... Now, my Q's are: - how many fry is normal for this fish? - can I leave fry with parents and when do I have to take them out? - what about fry feeding, is artemia good/enough for them and - what about water change, I read a suggestion to change 5% on 5-7 days is it a good one or not? with respect Warlord

I had a pair about 2 years ago, which I bred 5/6 times and now have 1 female with fry (the male died a couple of days ago). My answers are based on personal experience alone, other people may do things differently or have different views.
My pair produced between 20-30 ish each spawn. The fry can be left with parents until they are ready to breed again. Removal is a must at this point. Mine are fed on finely powdered flake alone, and do very well. Mine are in a 4 footer with Leptosoma, and I change 20% of the water on a weekly basis. Hope this helps.

I would add, get a breeder net to house the fry.

@damo: Personal experience is the best help that I can get. It may be different from case to case but I always appreciate this kind of help. thank you my friend... @VNeal: Concerning the breeder net I suppose that you meant it is good to have it prepared so when the fry get older to put them in there to prevent adults aggression? I have no idea how many fry do I have but I hope that I will do all that is in my power to prevent any death. I am not a seller I give away fish to all my friends when I have them to give. I hope that this species will breed a lot since I know only one person in my country that have them and didn't breed them until now. I will act based on your experience and guides that you give me, I know it is the best way I have seen only one or two , let say good articles about this species on the internet. It seems that it is not so popular. I have no idea why, they are first of all easy to sex and they look great. The price of this fish here is 10-12 Eur per single fish it is a lot of money here so they are not too popular, having in mind that in order to have a bounded pair you need to purchase several of them and dominant male and female will kill subdominant ones in most cases it may be the reason why people avoid them, it may be the reason why people avoid all shell dwellers... on the other hand it is the same case with other species from lake tanganyika...

I like to use the breeder net, because moving the fry is stress full enough. The water quality/chemistry will be different from tank to tank.

Mine live in a 10 gallon tank and get a 50% water change once a week. I feed my fry the same food the adults get just ground up a bit. There fry have been living with them for a month or two now. I don't move the fry I move the parents. There's only two of them and they use the shells more making it that much easier to catch them. Mine have 40-50 fry in with them ranging from 1/2 inch to an inch.
