Algae growing like mad on sand bottom and shells
« on: March 09, 2017, 11:26:05 AM »
Just siphoned a bunch of green algae off my sand bottom plus shells. I have an 40G breeder tank going with shellies+colony of fry. Anything I'm doing wrong to have this problem with my tank or is this normal? Any help on this matter will be appreciated. Doing 50% WC weekly and feeding flake food 2X daily to these guys.

Did the algae you siphoned off appear as a sheet or bluish green in color?

too much light and from what ive read too much phospate in the water coloumn. i would manually remove as much as possible and reduce the light period. i'm no expert though. these people are http://www.plantedtank.net/forums/23-algae/

Thanks!  It is probably cyanobacteria and not an algae though it is often called blue-green algae.

I'm not convinced that too much phosphate is the culprit as I have none in my tanks and have occasional problems in a couple of my tanks.

My understanding is inadequate water circulation is often cited as the major problem.

I have only been able to reduce or eliminate it by removing as much as possible via siphoning and then treating with erythromycin per the pkg directions.

erythromycin huh, makes sense. even though its in the name, i always forget that cyanobacteria isnt an algae

A full blackout for 5-7 days will also kill BGA without the antibiotic. You can't peek during this period. Filters on, no feeding, no water changes. Full blackout. Wrap in a few layers of black plastic, even the top. No light. Plants, if any, will not be harmed. They might elongate a little, but not serious.

I have done blackouts and they do work. Clean out as much algae as you can before the blackout. Do a large 50% water change. Blackout. Then do another large scale clean to siphon out any gunk. 50% water change. Then increase your circulation and water changes.

Yep the full blackout works like a charm. I had the same sheets of green algae on everything for months then I did the 7 day black out with towels around my tank. The algae was gone for good after that.

It's important you don't overfeed or leave the lights on for too long each day also or the cyano will be able to gain a hold again.

Okay here's an update of my 40G breeder tank. Started out with 12 fish and now have a nice size colony going.  Check video:
