I did not know that about Excel and Val. Thanks for the heads up. Luckily, I do not use Excel. I only use Aquarium Co-op's Easy Green and root tabs (mainly for the Amazon Swords).

Wait and see if any of them get pushed up to the surface. Get them then. Especially so since they may end up dying from the stress.

Thanks for putting up the photo's.

I don't know if you know this or not, but don't use Excel in your tank with the Vals. That is if you use Excel. The Vals don't tolerate it and will die. Plus Vals don't need it. They can extract their carbon from the Alkalinity (Bicarbonates) in your tank.

So I picked up another 6 from a different LFS and I think I got 3 males and 3 females in the batch. Although they were all pretty small (smaller than my first 6 were when I acquired them last year), 3 were even smaller than the others and the body shape was noticeably different. These were more of a bullet or torpedo shape than the other 3. I think the bullet shaped fish are the 3 females.

As to behavior, the original 6 chased the 3 that that I think are males and totally left the 3 bullet shaped ones alone.  Also, the bullet shaped fish hung much closer to the shell bed than the other 3.

I'm hoping to get a spawn soon but these ladies are really small and I don't think they will be mature for another couple of months. And then how do I catch the extra males?????

Try your local clubs. Many times members there have fish they sell.

i would try aquabid , or facebook. they are a common species kept by many aquarist. though they are not common to all fish stores.
If you still have no luck i carry them occasionally on my website. though im not here to promote myself. so i wont be listing it. on aquabid the wetspot is a very reliable source , if you buy from breeders just be sure to look at their seller history, most people have good ones but its worth checking before you bid.

Photos of the multie tank. I moved them out of the previous tank and into a 20L with black National Geographic sand. I really like this stuff.

Their tank sits next to my planted tank. I thought I might as well show that one too.

Excuse the poor upkeep. I really need to clean the glass and replant all the floating jungle val.

In my opinion and from what I have seen the best way to really tall if you have a female or male is simply by Behavior. Just look at them. The males will behave in an aggressive way to the other males. They will mock fight. But not really fight too hard.

Females will hardly ever if ever fight each other. They will also try to lure the males into the show. Size does matter and that can make a big difference but really behavior is even more reliable especially when they are all about the same size.

I don't know of any smaller African cats off the top of my head.

The cats get the fry at night when they are really active. If any fry get to the point where they are not at the bottom, they will have a chance.

Thanks Jerry, I've been following your posts. How has it been going lately?

I get they will be predatory, and I'm OK with that. I think there has to be some balance I can find. Hoping a ton of shells and only 2 cats will get me close.

Any suggestions for "african" cats in the 2"-3" range?

Someone needs to work on breeding "dwarf" versions of fish. I would love angels and some of the larger cats to be half their size...  ;)

Welcome to the site!!

I just got rid of my four 11 year old S. lucipinnis that were in with the Multies in a 30 gallon tank. They controlled the Multi fry population 100%. You won't get any fry production at all with them in there. (I should say I did get 4 fry survive within the past year-but that is pitiful.)
