I'm with you on the backgrounds. I've certainly tried my share of post-setup solutions also. End of the day, having a background makes a huge positive difference and there's just no better alternative than taking the time to handle it before setup. Since I got into Tanganyikans, I've even taken to doing both sides as well--IME reducing outside stimuli helps them to calm and settle and reduces skittishness and can be really helpful in a room that gets regular traffic.

Algae has been a constant battle for me this winter. What process do you use for your bleach dip?

As far as controlling snail populations, I am a huge believer in assassin snails. They completely eliminated pond snails from my tanks and are currently in the process of handling MTS I brought in on some plants last year. I can't recommend them enough.
