Title: Members keeping N. American natives?
Post by: Miles44 on March 18, 2017, 07:03:14 PM
I've been keeping natives for a few years now and have been focusing on darters.  Was wondering if anyone else here keeps them as well. I also have been looking for this book (https://www.amazon.com/dp/087666804X/ref=wl_it_dp_o_pC_nS_ttl?_encoding=UTF8&colid=1ON3W86F8D6JL&coliid=I1N0Q2ZKIUSETP/). And i don't want to pay these crazy internet prices.  I've been to my local public library but the book is under reference and am unable to take it out. If anyone has one or knows somebody who does and wants to sell it at a reasonable price please let me know. I'd be very appreciative. Here (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sS-39IUGMjg/) is a video I shot a little bit ago of a few of the fish I have. Darters are so cute if you have a chance to acquire some I would highly recommend trying them if you haven't already.

I actually had some wild caught darters before I found shelldwellers.  I caught them in a clear creek at the old family farm here in WV.  Cold water fish for sure.  They needed a lot of O2 in the water and preferred live food.  Very cool little fish.  I couldn't get them to spawn, but enjoyed their antics.

Best of luck finding the book!

Miles

I watched a bunch of your videos. Very nice. I was most interested in the Pygmy Sunfish. We have some in the Pine Barrens that might make it outdoors over winter, but I don't have the soft acid water of the Pine Barrens.

Thanks Jerry.  The pygmy sunfish are awesome little fish.  I keep them in 100% RO water.  They do very well in that setup, displaying to each other all the time.  They have the best behaviors. I had to order via aquabid myself being here on the west coast.

It's not the book I wanted but I ordered freshwater fishes of mexico (https://www.amazon.com/Freshwater-Fishes-Mexico-Robert-Miller/dp/0226526046/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1490138930&sr=1-1&keywords=freshwater+fishes+of+mexico/) today. I noticed it had dramatically dropped in price. Heard it was a good book to read. I'm looking forward to receiving it.  Though amazon says ships in 1 to 2 months!

I don't know if I should trust a page like this, but here is a way to download the pdf of Handbook of Darters. How do you check if its safe to click on Download?

Link removed due to dubious safety.

Thanks for the link Jerry.  I didn't want to open the link with my new laptop so I used my old iphone and it says you need to login to see if the download is available in your country then when you go to register it just takes you from one website to another.  Very sketchy so I just closed the browser.

You may also want to check out nanfa.org, North American Native Fish Association, to see if they may offer either a download, links or the book.
